DotNetNuke and ADA Compliance
In our never-ending quest for new business, I have come across more than a
few RFPs for web site and portal design, which mandate that the site contain
accessible features for individuals with disabilities--more specifically,
Section 508 compliant.
Unfortunately, this is a bit of a complicated process, and very few sites in
their entirety pass as 100% compliant. There are a number of elements that can
cause non-compliance--skin, modules, and user content.
The good news is that DNN 5.0 will be released with XHTML compliance, and
contain several new skins that pass compliance out of the box. The default
doctype on a new install of 5.0 will be XHTML 1.0 Transitional (and HTML 4.0 for
upgrades, so as to minimize any issues with existing skins during the upgrade).
So, that takes care of the skin package to some degree, but there's still the
modules and the content. Currently, much work is being done on requiring the
public parts of new modules to be XHTML compliant, but admin features, etc
require a lot more work due often to javascript. At this point, it is reported
that roughly 7 of the core modules are XHTML compliant, with more to come in
future version releases.
So, if you're dealing with clients who require compliance, with a little
work, you can make it happen
